What is a website?  A website is a location on the Internet that contains pages of information regarding services, images, sounds, video files for other information someone wishes to provide.  Sites are owned and managed by individuals, companies or organizations.

Why do I need a website?  In this information age, without a presence on the Web, your business or organization is virtually invisible.  The web has been become a critical information source for the vast majority of consumers.  If you have a business or organization, you must be on the Web.

Are all websites created equal?  No.  An effective website is a combination of what your visitor sees and critical technical components behind the scenes.  The visitor must have a rewarding experience plus the technology upon which the site is built must be designed to keep the site running and easy to update and maintain.

What is a domain name?  A domain name is a unique name that sends users to your site on the Internet.  The domain is a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) that serves as your address on the Internet.  A URL begins with http://.  Domain names are purchased and must be maintained to continue using the name.

How do I get my own domain name?  There a many domain name registrars, some reputable and some not.  To purchase or more accurately rent a domain name you must search the database of all current registered names and when you find a name that you want and that is available you must engage a domain registrar to secure it for you.

What is a hosting service?  A hosting service allows a third party to store information on the Internet.  Information that is stored allows your website to be displayed on the Internet.  Most hosting sites have a fee associated for storage of files.

How do I set up a hosting service?  As with domain registrars, hosting services are numerous and with varying degrees of reputability.  There a are a wide variety of hosting packages available, many of which are inappropriate for most needs.  Often-free hosting space is available if you know were to look.

What is an IP Address?  The IP address is a unique set of numbers that identifies a computer or server on the Internet.  Every computer has a unique number assigned, if a machine does not have an IP address it cannot be on a network.

How can I get an email address that contains the name of my web site?  Many people have AOL, MSN, Yahoo or other generic email address for personal use.  If you want to appear to be more professional, you can get an email address, which includes your domain name like Bob@mybusiness.com.  This can be established at the same time you register your domain name with a simple email alias.

What is an email alias?  An email alias is an email account that allows you to use an email account that does not really exist.  Messages sent to the alias email account are routed to a real address.  This way you can have an address such as info@mybusiness.com.
